I hate splints
May 2009

The first week there was the novelty of figuring out how to get dressed...ever tried to put socks on with just your left hand?...how to eat...no cutting food into bite size pieces with just one hand. There were lots of fun and giggles as my husband dressed me and cut my food for me and washed and dried my hair. Of course I also had strong “happy” drugs that week.
The second week was the worst. The fun turned into frustration. There wasn’t much I could do by myself so I became a couch potato in front of the TV. My hand hurt because the good drugs were replaced with over-the-counter stuff. Reality set in and the 6 weeks of splint time seemed interminably long. Lots of tears that week.
Week three things turned around again. Pain was pretty much gone; I could see healing progress and I had figured out there were a lot of things I could do, like dress myself, if I went slow and didn’t expect perfection.
So here I am in week four. Still very over the novelty of all this, but on the 2 week home stretch of splint-wearing. Rehab sessions are going well and a full recovery is expected so there is plenty of good stuff this week.
I’m so glad I built up my jewelry inventory before surgery! I’ve had several orders and I’m out of some bamboo images already. However, I got the green light to start, slowly, making some jewelry this week. It’s hard! After being basically immobilized for 4 weeks my hand doesn’t do what I ask of it yet. Nevertheless it feels good to do something productive, even if it’s just 30-40 minutes each day.
I have added a few new galleries and shops in the past weeks. Solaris Gallery in Califon, NJ and the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, MO are both carrying my bamboo pieces. And there are a few other shops who have asked for samples.
I’ve been accepted into Boise’s Art in the Park in September. I love that show and I’m happy to be included. It’s the weekend after Labor Day.
Seattle’s weather has been erratic but today is a beautiful sunny day. They don’t happen that often here so I wanted you all to see a picture of it. Bye. I’m going outside!
P.S. I got a lovely unexpected mention in the May 11th The Carrot Box blog. I’ve been to their site before and it’s not only beautiful but very specific: it’s all about non-metal rings! You’d be amazed at the gorgeous rings they’ve featured from glass, plastics, resins, etc. Be sure to check it out.
